Land releases in south
The State Government plans
to increase the supply of
land available for housing
development by extending
the Urban Growth
Boundary.
It claims the current
supply will run out in 10 to
12 years and the new areas
will extend supply to 15 to
20 years.
If you think this means
that the new areas won't be
developed until all the
existing supply has been
used up, you're mistaken.
The Southern Times
Messenger of August 22
incorrectly states that this
land "is not planned to be
released for at least a
decade". In fact, Planning
SA states in Expanding
Adelaide's Urban Boundary
(www.planning.sa.gov.au)
that this land is "not
necessarily for use in the
next two to three years".
That's because it will take
that long to carry through
the changes to planning
documents and rezoning of
the land.
However once the
formalities have been
completed, "the land will
be earmarked and ready to
go as demand dictates
... This means that
the vast bulk of it will be
developed variously some
five to 15 years into the
future".
So what we're arguing
about now could be just
around the corner, if that's
what the market and
developers pressuring the
State Government dictate!
